Thank you for the beautiful article, HL. Like you, I could not (!) go to a meeting, for lots of different reasons. Thinking that was my only hope for salvation, I languished for years in my misery, trying to fight the beast on my own. Then I finally got the idea to look for online support communities. I stumbled in to a few that said my only hope was to go to a meeting, then I found MM and all the told me was, “Welcome! We’re glad you’re here. We’ll support you in whatever works for you.”
Thank you, MM!

How Did I Get Here?
Hi Carolyn, I’m glad you found MM. This is our public site and, unfortunately, a lot of people aren’t comfortable posting about their drinking problem on a public site. You will be welcomed with open arms and lots of shoulders to lean on over at one of our private communities, the MMForum or MMListserv, you will find the links to these communities at the top of sidebar on the right side of this page under the heading, “Looking for Support?”

How Did I Get Here?
Hola Ellie Best! Welcome to MM!. I want to congratulate you on taking the step to look for support to help you reach your drinking goals! I don’t know if you are aware, but this site is our public site where our members share their experiences with people just like you. However, most of our members feel more comfortable over on our private community sites, The MM Forum and The MM Listserv, you can find links for these communities over at the top of the sidebar. There you will get a lot more rapport and find many people who, just like you, are looking for ways to change their current drinking habits to healthy drinking habits.

The day after…
Welcome to MM, Amy P. Sounds like you’ve been on this journey a while and have done some exploring. That’s phenomenal. Our members come from and incorporate a wide variety of support resources including SMART, Women For Sobriety (WFS), AA, yoga, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, The Sinclair Method, Therapy…we encourage each other to use whatever works for you-and keep looking until you find it. Many of our members are fearful of doing a 30 at first-counting me, but then find it to be an invaluable experience that they are comfortable repeating whenever they need a break or reset from drinking. It is not required, though, and some of our long-time successful moderators have never done a 30. Our guidelines are guidelines, not rules, some members like following the guidelines, some of them tweak them to fit their needs.

This is our public forum and we appreciate you sharing your story here. If you’d like a little more support from our community (many people are still afraid of posting about their journey on a public site), you’ll find it at the MMForum or MMList-the links are over at the top of the page on the right under the heading “Looking For Support?”

Again, welcome!

Time to tackle the 30 day abstinent challenge
Jerry, I, too, was someone that had to get up in the middle of the night to drink. I suffered from palpitations-caused by my drinking- that would wake me up about 2:00 a.m. every night. They terrified me and the only way to stop them was to drink, so I’d get up and drink wine until 6 a.m when I passed out again. It’s no way to live. Sleeping does get better, in fact, it’s one of the things that most of us rave about when we finally get our drinking under control again. As a matter of fact, someone on the MMForum described her sleep as “Delicious” the other day.
If you would like help setting up an Abstar row or joining one of our private communities, you can write me at karymayhickey@gmail.com. Of course, if you want to continue to just post here, that’s okay, too. We appreciate you sharing your journey here.

Drinking Dream
Wow, I’d forgotten this post and that dream. I kind of needed to read this again right now because once again, those thoughts are intruding. I just celebrated my birthday and I was thinking, “I should let myself drink three times a year, Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas dinner and my birthday.”
Funny how the universe drops these little reminders down to us.
I want to take this opportunity to point out that this is a public page and anyone posting on here using their real names is revealing their identity and drinking problem to the public. This explains why most of MM’s support takes place in our private communities, the MM forum and the MMList. While this page was created to help erase the stigma associated with seeking help for problem drinking, we understand that many people still need to protect their identity.

Time to tackle the 30 day abstinent challenge
Welcome Jerry! We have several members who have had the similar experience of maintaining abstinence for years or decades with AA and then decide to explore moderation-without support-and find themselves drinking at a level they are not comfortable with. A 30 is a good way to reset, some members find they need more than a 30, it’s up to you. I do believe support from others who are tackling the same issues-just like the support AA provides so well- increases our chances of success. You might want to check out our MM forum http://forum.moderation.org/ or MMList http://www.moderation.org/online/listserv.html and join those who are currently doing a 30 or joining up with a group starting one in April-there’s almost always someone starting a new 30 at the beginning of each month. If you have any problems signing on, let me know at karymayhickey@gmail.com.
